Thank you so much, Vicki, for your prompt answer. From one of your comments...
...I can already tell that your testimony experience is superior to Brian T.'s Mountain Dew testimony!! ;o) But, on a serious note, I wanted to ask another question that would help me out a little further. You mentioned that the feelings from God that you experienced couldn't be described as a "burning in your bosom". That's OK. I'm not necessarily looking for similarities; significant differences could also be very enlightening. Actually, I'm coming to the conclusion that each seperate religious community passes on its own particular expectations of how to "feel" God to their own groups, which means that each group would develop its own ways of experiencing the divine, and their own language for the experience. Anyway, with that said, Latter-day Saints don't always describe "the Spirit" as a "burning in their bosom". Often, perhaps even more frequently, promptings from the Holy Ghost are described as a "still, small voice". It's often described as a "voice" that is more felt than heard. While growing up in the Church I was told that such subtle "whisperings" of the Holy Ghost need to be listened to carefully -- that if I was not "in tune" with the Spirit, or if I was in an irreverent environment (ie., listening to AC/DC in my car -- OK, I'm showing my age) that the Holy Ghost's "whisperings" would not be heard by me, and I would lose his guidance until I became "in tune" with him again. In this particular case, the subtlety was emphasized rather than the strength of the "burning". I have an opinion as to why the Holy Ghost is described in two very different ways, but it's off-topic right now. You didn't detail your exact mental processes that lead you to believe you are being called by the Holy Spirit, but I sort of read between the lines. I hope I read correctly. When you are being led by the Holy Spirit, could it be described as "whisperings", or a "still small voice"? If not, what would be a more accurate description? Thanks again, Vicki! |
