Yes, it's true that Joseph took off his garments before he went to Carthage, and told his followers to take their's off too (BTW, he apparently was never very strict about wearing garments, especially in hot weather!). Interestingly, the one man who was not seriously injured at Joseph's assassination was the only man of the group who defied Joseph's order and wore his garments to the jail. I can't remember the source right now. I think it was from one of Quinn's books. I'll look it up tomorrow and post the source. As far as garment evolution, I believe that Buerger has it in his book. I'll have to browse through that one tomorrow, too. There's not much to the evolution, though. Pretty much, they were just long-johns with symbolic markings up until around the 1920's in which the legs and the sleeves were shortened to allow the Church members to wear more stylish clothing. Other than that, they're essentially the same today as they were in Joseph Smith's days. But, I remember Buerger's book having some interesting facts about garment evolutions -- things like the markings being cut into the fabric back then, rather than embroidered into the fabric like it is now. I believe there was a symbolic reason for the cuts in the former days, but it's been awhile since I read about it. I'll have to review the book again.
