I don't agree that businessmen and bank managers are necessarily useless members of society, or even that they are necessarily stupid or poorly educated. Like it or not, for a smoothly running economy that provides adequate opportunities for gainful employment for most citizens, they are indispensible. I am persuaded that a big part of the financial hole that California currently finds itself in is that its Governor and many members of its legislature have inadequate business and management skills (skills of which I wish I had more). There is nothing shameful about an honest businessman making a reasonable and adequate profit while providing useful and honorable employment for others. True, there are far too many who are consumed by selfish greed, are narrowly concerned only with the bottom line, and who ruthlessly exploit and waste their employees and natural resources, forgetting that money should be regarded as a means to an honorable end rather than an end in itself. Still, if all people with a good business sense and management skills (including even the honest ones) suddenly died, those of us who were left would soon find ourselves in rather dire straits. I am sure you must realize this and were at least somewhat facetious in your blanket condemnation of businessmen and bank managers. There are more than just a few successful businessmen and managers who have used the money they have acquired to help others less well endowed than themselves and to pursue honorable interests other than business, including intellectual activities such as advancing their own and mankind's knowledge of science and how the universe works. We could always use more of that type, though--there is certainly not a surplus of them. Gunnar Modified by Gunnar at Fri, Jul 25, 2003, 04:14:27 |
