let them govern themselves.

Is the CoJCoLDS 0-2 on this one?

We just went through a round of micro-personal-life management efforts at our Ward and Stake levels. I was disgusted. Even my TBM spouse pushed back.

Have you ever read the 1990 Packer address on this topic (link below)? Unfortunately, the "course correction" indicated therein, at least on the time/micromanagement issue, does not seem to have taken hold in many areas.

He is using a catchy phrase to sell the COB's 1990 money grab (that took a lot of the vital,independent spirit out of the religion IMO). "Every member a janitor." Sheesh!

His talk is a soup of contradictions.
1)"Salvation is free" 2 Ne. 2:5.
2) “Come, my brethren, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters; and he that hath no money, come buy and eat; yea, come buy wine and milk without money and without price.” 2 Ne. 9:50.
3) “Behold, now it is called today until the coming of the Son of Man, and verily it is a day of sacrifice, and a day for the tithing of my people; for he that is tithed shall not be burned at his coming.” D&C 64:23.
3)Let us here observe, that a RELIGION that does not require the sacrifice of all things, never has the power sufficient to produce the faith necessary unto life and salvation . . . (D&C p. 50 1835 Ed.)

The micromanagement I have observed, I think, was a ploy right before tithing settlement to shame people into coughing up their children's futures. For example, the Ward-level program was to review what the individual needed to work on most, AT TITHING SETTLEMENT, IN FRONT OF THE CHILDREN. After I asked "what happened to 'teach correct principles and let [us] govern ourselves?' " even my TMB wife pushed back.

What the hell is that all about? Back in Nazi Germany they used kids as well to tell on their parents, is that the next step?? This is completely insane. Talk about the next level of guilt trips. Forcing people to pay tithing by using the children as a means of exerting pressure. It's utterly disgusting and below anything. Revolting is what it is!!!

COB's 1990 money grab

I am confused. How was the elimination of budget contributions in 1990 a money grab?

You are correct that much of Packer's talk is not directly on point. I thought however that the following admonition related to your complaint.

Church activities must be replaced by family activities. Just as we have been taught with temporal affairs, the spirit of independence, thrift, and self-reliance will be re-enthroned as guiding principles in the homes of Latter-day Saints.

And, just as stake leaders now will sponsor fewer activities, leaving more of the time and money to ward leaders, ward leaders in turn will leave more of both to the families.

Now that you have provided specifics, I see that your beef was not so much about too many meetings (another form of micro-management) but rather about overbearing leaders. I agree that your Bishop's actions at tithing settlement were wholly inappropriate.
