Not much to say except it is smart of the Church to do such. It is also in line with LDS doctrine and philosphy.

In line with LDS doctrine? Why does a church that preaches the eating of meat sparingly have the biggest cow/calf ranch in the US? AHF

What, if anything, do you find objectionable about this?

The church is certainly within its rights to have all the agricultural businesses it wants. The magnitude is rather surprising. Although I guess it shouldn't be given that the church has to put its money somewhere so why not (as a §501 tax-exempt corporation) put it into businesses which it can grow and reap huge profits from without paying any taxes? The church also has a competitive advantage for reasons other than not having to pay taxes or disclose financials. They can call missionaires to work there at the missionaires'--not the church's--expense. Remember this thread?

rpcman, for some interesting speculation about hunter-gatherer consciousness you might enjoy Morris Berman's "Wandering God."

You know, I have never really thought about that. Why should a non-taxpaying organization be allowed to compete against taxpaying citizens? I think that's a load of bull. Not to mention that these churches can turn right around and use the money earned to influence politicians to even further thier cause of making more money.
I would REALLY love to see the LDS Church's financial statements. Since these most all the leaders are businessmen, I wonder how much "shady" stuff is going on.

They technically can't influence legislation or politicians under §501 but we all know how well they walked the fine line there with Prop. 22 (and similar measures).
