This is so off topic it doesn't rightfully belong here but a phrase has been sticking in my head and I can't for the life of me recall where it comes from it is just this... "my sometimes friend" Does anyone recognize the phrase and where it comes from? Vicki |

"my sometimes friend"
Does anyone recognize the phrase and where it comes from?
VickiCould it perhaps be a quote of President Clinton, in reference to Arafat?

We've got one here too. Tony Flair has many sometimes friends.

Adverbs and adjectives Re: Help with a phrase anyone? -- Vicki Top of thread Archive

The confusing thing about the phrase is the unusual use of the word sometimes as an adjective. Its most common function is as an adverb. ("Sometimes I talk to Vicki.") As an adjective, the singular is more common. ("Our sometime ally.") In this construction it can mean either "former" or "occasional." I would assume the latter is what is meant by "my sometimes friend." But it's an awkward-sounding phrase to me.

This leads me to think it's from a piece of Shakespeare or poetry as portions of each often come to mind. I'll take a look at my collection of literature and check the glossaries in those books that have them! Vicki

The only phrase I could come up with that even comes close is "our sometime sister"...oh well! Vicki

I am interested in your reason for exploring this expression? That is, was it recently used with you or someone whom you know? Alf’s grammatical review is good. However, if someone use the phrase, it may be doubtful that he/she had much interest in grammar. I would suspect that such a comment would be sarcastic -- a criticism of a person for being a friend only part of the time.
If you trace it to a literary work particularly from Shakespeare, the phrase was no doubt quite deliberately constructed to convey a specific meaning in the context of its appearance.

Yes, I know I left myself wide open with that post title. What's life without a little humor? JAK,
No, the phrase just keeps coming through my mind and in a melacholy tone. The only phrase like it I've found so far IS from Shakespeare "our sometime sister". It's not important.

Did you imagine for a second that I didn't think this was addressed to me, Vicki? If you require a friend to be a sycophant and humor you even when spouting nonsense, then I guess I'm not your friend.

We can do this publicly or privately or you can continue to view things through your own narcissism Martin, but you are wrong. I'll be back in 10 minutes or so to see what you've decided.
