Mormon Olympic PR?

Stopped into the visitors center/tourist council across from the state capitol the other day to ask if they had any maps of Polygamy villages or compounds that I could visit while in the area for the olympics. The lady behind the counter was quick to reply that "The LDS church doesn't believe in Polygamy" and then started to explain "church doctrine" to me. I cut here off by letting her know I had NOT asked about the LDS or Mormon church at all, just wanted a map that showed where the polygamy groups would be so I could drive by & see them. Like the Harmson group, the Kingstons & the city on the Utah/Arizona border and others.
Why the apology & the informing me about the mormons when I didn't even ask about them and the practice they now say "was not doctrinal"?

Shooter,

Your motivations in this instance are questionable.

Did you really believe that this lady would have such a map? Or was it really your intent to embarrass her?

Is it really so strange for a person to want to make it clear that not only do they not have such maps, they don't even have a reason to have such maps?

Would you go to Los Angeles and ask a city tourist council member to provide you with a map showing where the gangs are found?

Craig

Excellent points, Craig.

I also question the veracity of shooter's story since precisely the same story appeared in the "Rolly and Wells" column (a Liz Smith/gossip/Man About Town type column) of the Salt Lake Tribune newspaper just a few days ago. If I remember correctly, the column noted that the person inquiring was a foreigner, a much more plausible scenario than that suggested by shooter, who as evidenced from his previous posts is more than familiar with Utah.

I wouldn't ask for a map of the gangs but I would ask for a map to the home of the stars.
One of the most famous things about Utah is Polygamy. A map showing where these wierd folks live is something I would get in a minute so I could go & see where they live. The Harmsons in Manti have wierd signs on their homes & buildings & it almost looks like they are taking over the town. In Pennsylvania I can get a map showing locations of Amish communities. So why not a map of Polygs in Utah?

Shooter,

Your analogy with the Amish is a poor one. Being Amish is not against the law, but polygamy is. Why would a tour group or government agency (outside of law enforcement) possess or make available a map showing where people are engaged in illegal activity?

I still suspect your motives in questioning this woman - if the event that you describe actually ever occurred. Given the information that Mensch has provided, it appears quite possible that you are simply borrowing from the newspaper acccount.

I found the article I referenced on the Salt Tribune web version.

Here's shooter's orginal quote:

Stopped into the visitors center/tourist council across from the state capitol the other day to ask if they had any maps of Polygamy villages or compounds that I could visit while in the area for the olympics. The lady behind the counter was quick to reply that "The LDS church doesn't believe in Polygamy" and then started to explain "church doctrine" to me. Why the apology & the informing me about the mormons when I didn't even ask about them and the practice they now say "was not doctrinal"?

And here's the quote from the Rolly & Wells column (link below):

A Little Too Sensitive?
When a visiting photographer stopped at the Utah Travel Council's visitor center across from the Utah Capitol last week, he asked a receptionist if there was a map showing the locations of polygamist towns and enclaves.
The receptionist quickly responded: "The LDS Church does not believe in polygamy!"

Same story with some amateur embellishment from shooter.
