Barbara Thiering claims in this book that Jesus was part of the royal priestly line of the Qumran sect, Jesus was born out of wedlock, did not perform any miracles, did not die on the cross but was drugged and later revived in a burial cave, married twice, and fathered three children. It must be noted that none of the Dead Sea Scrolls mention Jesus. Yet there are people in the non-biblical documents that are called by pseudonyms, which are names that an author makes up. Thiering claims that the same person can be called by a number of different pseudonyms. From this claim she assumes that out of all of the pseudonyms, there are two main people written about called the Teacher of Righteousness and the Wicked Priest/the Scoffer/Man of a Lie/Rival Teacher (11-16). Her discoveries about Jesus are based solely on the idea that Jesus was, in pseudonym terms, this Rival Teacher and that John the Baptist was the Teacher of Righteousness (19).

Not only do nearly all scholars not agree with Thiering's discovery, but also the evidence shows that Thiering is really jumping out on a limb to make these claims. There are a plethora of examples to be given, but for the sake of simplicity I will just mention one. Everything that Thirering claims is based on the dating of the DSS scrolls. She throws out the dating that archaeologists, paleographers, and carbon-14 dating have all concluded with. She gives very little evidence for her new method of dating. I am not skeptical of someone who goes against the grain, but I am incredibly skeptical of someone that must make up her own evidence to prove a point. This is an extreme example of what I call eisegesis (reading into things).
