Hi, I am interested in performing in musicals and some require me (male) to dress as a female. What is the church stance on this? |

What church would prohibit the wearing of costumes for theatrical performances? Does the LDS Church, like other churches, not offer period presentations such as the Nativity? I fail to see a problem with a male **costumed** as a female, an angel, diety or even a cow. Don't lose sleep over it, play on!Vicki

Vicki is correct. Unless you specify what church you are talking about, your question goes into space. Surely you know there are hundreds of churches. There IS NO THE CHURCH.If you are Mormon (since that is part of the title for this site), you need to recognize that “Mormon” is but one of those hundreds of churches to which I referred.
Put on the costume, enjoy the theatre, enjoy the cast, enjoy the performance.

Perhaps you mistook this site as a Mormon site, filled with active Mormons (having linked from lds-mormon.com). Just FYI, it's not. There may be a few active Mormons on the board, but most people here are either not Mormon, or inactive/ex- Mormons. As a prior Mormon (active for over 20 years), I think I can say it's fine to dress differently for a role in a play. For example, certain types of clothing would be considered indecent (e.g., loin cloths), but are often used in Temple Pageants to portray Book of Mormon scenes. I very much doubt the Mormon Church has an official stance on how one can dress when performing a role. If you really are worried, however, you should probably ask the person who would be in a position to punish you (your Bishop). If he says it's ok, he certainly can't punish you for it later!
Personally, since I can't imagine any harm coming from it, and have never heard in my extensive membership that it is disallowed, I would do it until someone told me it wasn't allowed.
