France & Others

You all know that France, Germany, Russia, and to a lesser extent China are opposing the war and the US in its rush to war. Now, what I very often hear is many people criticizing and even bashing one or all of them, saying these countries have ulterior motives. For instance, France wants to stand up to the US and feel strong; or German chancellor Shredder took a strong stand against the US in order to be elected; Russia & France have oil and economic interests in Iraq, etc. etc.

Now my question: How come SOME people go out of their way finding ulterior motives for these leaders, but never consider them having a real genuine conviction for the opposition to war? That really baffles me.
Any comments?
PS: Those factors may exist but IMO they are of second degree.

"How come SOME people go out of their way finding ulterior motives for these leaders, but never consider them having a real genuine conviction for the opposition to war?

And furthermore, how come those same people refuse to consider the possibility that the US leaders might have some ulterior motives also?

Hmmmmmm . . . you first!

But seriously, IMO both have the same underlying cause: lack of goos sense of jugdement. This is only for those who genuinely believe in what they say. In case of those who say such things rhetorically or for political reasons, and their heart isn't in it, . . . well then it becomes self-explanatory, right?

Now listen to this: A quote from Sen. John McCain by LA Times:

". . .The French . . . are trying to relive their country's past glories with their drive to spearhead resistance to the US. . . . [France is like] a fading actress from the '40s who is trying to dine out on her looks but doesn't have the face for it."

I am at a loss how to categorize him!!

It was a clever line keeping McCain in the news. It was a throw-away line. If considered seriously, it was a line intended to marginalize France. Since France is not saying what loyal Americans want to hear, it is easy to play the demagogue.

When I stated, “throw-away” I did not mean that McCain had not given it some thought. He knows something about soundbites. They have to be short, they have to seem to the point, and they have to be regarded as “newsworthy” by some news organization. It is easy to kick France now. They are not with the program.

In other words, if he had said maybe France like 80% of the world is genuinely concerned, wouldn't have been news!

That is correct. In addition, McCain has many issues with the Bush administration and has articulated many of them publicly. But, McCain is a Republican, and he has no need to offend Bush at this time on this issue. So what he said is political correct.

Bahman,

That's a good question.

Now please consider my question: How come SOME people go out of their way finding ulterior motives for their leaders, but never consider them having a real genuine conviction that war is unfortunately necessary? That really baffles me.

To Bahman and rdl: I don't support invading Iraq at this time, but the stupid and irresponsible allegations that President Bush is primarily interested in oil or has other ulterior motives in this endeavor are puerile rubbish and don't belong in a serious discussion.

Perhaps those same people have considered this possibility...and dismissed it for lack of evidence, or because there still seem ways in which war can be avoided.

To Bahman and rdl: I don't support invading Iraq at this time, but the stupid and irresponsible allegations that President Bush is primarily interested in oil or has other ulterior motives in this endeavor are puerile rubbish and don't belong in a serious discussion.

Could you please point out where an interest in oil was mentioned in this thread? Regarding other ulterior motives, well...until you can show an ability to read minds, your opinion on this matter is as valid (or invalid) as mine or anyone's.

Very fine points which you and rdl make here. Those countries which you mention KNOW first hand war on their soil. They, more than we, might have a very keen perception of what war is. Of course, I do not mean to minimize the World Trade Center or the Pentagon. That was on our soil. It was not a continuing battle with enduring attacks from the air with hundreds or thousands of bombs falling continuously for days.

rdl made a vapid point, JAK, just as you have. You have grossly insulted our intelligence and have shamefully and disgustingly disparaged the tragically hard-won experience of our own war veterans! It is comparitively easy to fight on one's own soil for one's own country. To have fought so bravely on other people's soil takes FAR more commitment and courage, you ass!

Go out to Arlington or to a Veteran's Day parade and minimize the experience of our vets -- such as those from D-Day -- that way, and I hope to hell you get your pompous ass handed to you!

- Martin

If anything ever gets me to support this war, it will involve the shallowness and ignorance of the vapid anti-war crowd such as we've seen here from some (as opposed to the thoughtful anti-war folks).
