Boyd K. Packer recently addressed the Stake Presidents in the Northwest United States. He told them that dramatic changes are planned for the church (that would be the Mormon church-for the uninitiated), and church leaders are worried about how the members will react. It seems unlikely to me that anything truly dramatic will happen, because a dramatic change would be a change in some of the basic doctrines like the LDS church is the only church with priesthood authority or the doctrine that women can't hold the priesthood. However, it does seem likely that the church will need to change in order to stay in business as tithing revenues and investment values have come way down over the past 2 years. This trend will continue because:
In the 1970s, I remember our ward trying to raise money to build a new ward building and later, a new stake center. I wonder if local congregations are to be sidled with more of their own financial responsibility. I can't imagine any real change-just further opportunity for the members to become more diligent in the exercise of their faith (that diligence being defined by old stuck-in-a-rut men in Salt Lake City). If you think about it, the entire church organization is designed to prevent change. It promotes only those who most diligently conform to the church's most conservative views, and then it prevents anyone else from having any power as all leaders know "which way they face" and are removed if they face the wrong way. Does anyone know what is planned? Does anyone know when? Are there other theories out there about what kinds of changes the church could make? Are there any suggestions? Bob |

to be clear, did BKP say both that big changes were planned, and that the leaders are worried? you make four points, what are your sources for points 2&3?
I agree thought that the church is not going to rock the boat any more then it has too. If its membership threatning changes, I'm sure its survival related. Provided of course the rumors have any merit.

All 4 of my points are my own opinion. They are based on my own conversations with church members, those I know who have left the church and my observations of things in general. I am no expert, but in my job, I am required to draw accurate conclusions on very limited information, and that is what I have done here. If I am wrong, I would be happy if someone would correct me. The church has trouble retaining people who are wealthy enough to pay lots of tithing for 2 reasons. 1. With the downturn in the economy, people have less "gain" on which to pay 10%, and 2. I can't help but observe that wealthy people tend to be highly educated, and educated people seem to be leaving the church (Note BKPs statements about intellectuals). Now, perhaps someone will see intellectuals as a threat to the church for different reasons than those related to loss of faith, but I think BKP sees the threat that intellectuals will cause people to leave the church.
As educated people leave the church (or stop trying so hard at church), they take with them their leadership abilities. The church is left with less qualified candidates to be bishops, sunday school teachers, youth advisors and etc.
I don't doubt that the church is dealing with survival related issues today.

Interesting. I've been out of the loop for a while; so I havn't heard the rumors. Considering the recession I could see how that would cause problems. Perhaps they are going to finally sell BYU?

to be clear, did BKP say both that big changes were planned, and that the leaders are worried. According to my 2nd hand information. The source from which I got the information provided lots of this kind of information to me, and has never been wrong.

What is going to change is simple... Karl Malone will become public spokesman for "The Church".
Danny Ainge will become president of the Quorum of the Twelve.
Steve Young will become Prophet, Seer & Revelator, and President of the Church... and will implement a program of giving away tickets to pro sporting events to missionaries who will proselyte in the stands, using instant baptisms by beer suds to swell the ranks of the faithful. This is a followup to the successful 'bastball baptism' programs so many missionaries were using years ago.The all church sports tournaments will be back with the losers being forever banished to Panguitch, Escalante & Pinto, Utah.
Ezra Taft Benson will be disinterred & mummified & put on display in the Church museum of art & history as an example of an idiot in politics.
Women will get the Priesthood but it will be used as a money making method. They will have to pay monthly fees to maintain the power.
Partiarchs will once again charge fees for their Patriarchal blessings, those with more money get the better blessings.
In short... rumors are as stupid as this answer.
