A sick economy is usually not a big deal to one who has a decent job and feels relatively secure. So many of you may not find this question interesting. Of course one may develop an interest in such an economy because an acquaintance has been affected or is being threatened. I will be out of a contract at the end of this month because “things are slow.” Two years ago I posted my resume on a site and had to deactivate it after two weeks because of the overwhelming response. This time, after a month on the site I haven’t had even one call. Two years ago the reports said that some 700,000 high tech. jobs are going unfilled. Now high techies are being laid off. Of course some of these jobs have gone off shore too, as a result of the high cost to fill these jobs here over the last five years.(not now perhaps, but then). But some jobs have already been shipped. It is said that war brings jobs. I’ve heard that all my life. I’ve never took the time to confirm or disprove it. But what about the talk of war? What is the effect of the talk of war. Does that have the opposite effect? Is it possible that everyone could be holding back on whatever, while there is talk of war, because of the uncertainty of the future? I wonder if some hope for a war every now and then to spruce up things/put life into an economy? WWII, Korean war, Vietnam, Gulf war, ? I prefer to get a job due to an otherwise healthy economy, like we had a few years back, not due to a war. Are you being affected by this slow down? I keep hearing that the Canadian economy is kicking. That is not normally the case when the US economy is sputtering. So that too causes me to think that the US economy is sputtering for some particular reason as perhaps the talk of war.

Jesse; There is nothing "up" with the economy, it is down. The stock market is built on earnings, faith and confidence in the future. People are uncertain of the future and are scared, at the present time.I am putting what limited funds I have to invest into defense and armament companies. General Dynamics, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, and Boeing to name a few.
The very moment when the general public feels that we are winning the war on terror for sure and begin to witness actual massive gains in that war, that is the time to have money in the market, as companies will begin hiring and public confidence will soar once again.
Hang in there;

Try looking for tech jobs in the Bay area; there are quite a few, but they are mostly for Lockheed Martin (defense contractor). Yes, war creates jobs--for the defense sector. Perhaps that will trickle down eventually; we will have to see.-Dan
