A couple of days ago, the Iraqi Parliament unanimously rejected the UN resolution and just now we hear that Saddam has (reluctantly) accepted it. And we wondered what the “rule of majority” means! |

Hi Bahman,Do you think Saddam's -- at least temporary -- acquiescence will stop Bush from eventually going to war, for whatever reason? (I personally doubt it, but am curious about the opinions of others.)

... IMO, more real than the war itself. I give the war less than 50% chance of ever materializing. And here is my reasons:1) The whole international community, with the exception of US & UK, is against war. Not against disarming Saddam, mind you, but they rightfully believe that the inspection regime can do the job.
2) There will be unpredictable and probably insurmountable consequences "the day after" the "regime change" that even US & UK must admit and expect. And nobody wants to face them.
3) Contrary to popular views, especially from the "cowboy" administration, Saddam is not suicidal and can easily change tactics and eventually comly with the rsolution, albeit with lots of foot dancung!
4) Even though I am agaisnt the war, I agree with tough "cowboy" policy that is taking place for the simple reason that I believe "the gun at Saddam's head" is the only reason he is going to comply.
5) The whole international community in the form of UN is directly involved and the cowboys can't just find a small breach as an excuse for war. Fortunately, there are cooler heads in the UN and will try to difuse any such obstacles.
6) If, by any chance, all peaceful means fail, then I persoanlly don't blame the cowboys (I've come to love that term!!!) to go to war. And I see the military buildup taking place NOW to be good for that evetuality.
