In this world, at least by my studies, there are two main types of Churches. Ones based on teachings, and one based on prophecy. The teachings style is basically one man had a grouping of "opinions" or "teachings" of how he interpreted the meaning of the world. While not professing to have talked to God or learning directly from him, he might believed he was "inspired". Many modern Christian faiths fall into this catagory as some pastor or minister creates some interpretations of the Bible and forms a congregation. The Jewish faith falls into this catagory simply because the Jewish faith is usually lead by teachers or scholars of the scripture. Many times beliefs are simply a matter of tradition.

In "Teaching" style of Church ideology, liberalism is allowed because one can believe that not everything in the doctrine is correct due to invalid interpretation. This opens the door because you are never arguing with God, you are always arguing with a "scholar" and his opinion. Branching is common in this arena because scholars seperate out with differing opinions and hence the diversity. So being a liberal Jew or a liberal Christian (non-denominational) is extremely common and understandable.

In "Prophecy" style of Church ideology, liberalism is impossible. The Church believes itself a direct connection with God. Usually run by someone who believes they have direct contact with God, you can not argue the doctrine because arguing the doctrine is arguing with God. It is NOT run by scholars interpreting the Bible or other works, but a direct link receiving direct revelation from God. What it comes down to is that "Prophecy" style Churches are all or nothing. Either you accept it or reject it. You can't take peices, because once you start taking pieces, its athority is gone, hence the Church is false.

Mormonism is a "prophecy" style Church. It believes it is in direct contact with God. We have a lot of people these days trying to be "Liberal Mormons" and attempt to say the Church is true, but begin to make statements about how the Book of Mormon isn't accurate and how that God didn't ask the Church to discontinue Polygamy. The problem here is once you start arguing against official Doctrine, which includes the fact that the Book of Mormon is an accurate book, you stop being Mormon. You can't hunt and pick from the Church because once one peice of offical doctrine is considered invalid, the whole Church falls. Mormonism isn't a "teachings" church based on study and interpretation of the scriptures, it is completely based on direct communication from God.
